Crunchy and crisp – iceberg is a kiwi icon for good reason.

Here at LeaderBrand we have been growing lettuce for over 20 years. Today we are still one of the largest growers in New Zealand, supplying for both retail customers and processing.

Where does it grow?

We grow lettuce at both our Pukekohe and Gisborne farms, harnessing the warmer climate and fertile soil at both locations.

In Gisborne our salad house located close to the farm. Meaning we can process as soon as it’s harvested, getting it to customers fresh daily.

How do we grow it?

To make sure our iceberg is always crunchy and crisp, we follow these important steps:

  1. Depending on the season, our seedlings grow for around 5-9 weeks at our Gisborne nursery.
  2. Our seedlings are then transplanted into the soil, to grow for between 6 to 12 weeks. The growing time constantly changes depending on season and conditions on the farm.
  3. We harvest our lettuce by hand and bag it in the field. Bagging it immediately ensures it’s only touched once and helps give you the best shelf life.
  4. As soon as it’s harvested, we vacuum cool our lettuce to lock in the freshness. From there, it goes straight out to customers or into the salad house for processing.
  5. At the salad house, we prep, double-wash, shred, dry and pack our lettuce. Our lettuce is added to our popular Crispy salad, we also proudly supply shredded lettuce to Subway and Pita Pit .

DID YOU KNOW?

If your lettuce has started to wilt freshen it up by soaking it in cold water for a few minutes, this will help crisp the leaves to restore it.

We have designed our bags to be as thin as possible, it is 100% recyclable as ‘soft plastics’ – keep an eye out for bins at your local supermarket!
